Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-

Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332-
 

Removing and installing starter, vehicle with manual gearbox

Drift -10 - 14-
Removing
–  With ignition switched off, disconnect earth cable from battery -A- → Chapter.
–  Remove noise insulation → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.66.
Vehicles with TDI engine
–  Remove air filter housing → Rep. gr.23.
Continued for all vehicles
 

Removing and installing starter, vehicle with manual gearbox

–  Disconnect electrical connector -1-.
–  Press off cap -2-.
–  Unscrew nut -3- and remove terminal 30/B+.
 

Removing and installing starter, vehicle with manual gearbox

–  If fitted, unscrew nut -1- from upper securing bolt of starter -B-.
–  If fitted, remove earth cable -2-.
 

Removing and installing starter, vehicle with manual gearbox

–  If fitted, unscrew nut -1- from lower securing bolt of starter -B-.
–  If fitted, remove earth cable -2-.
 

Removing and installing starter, vehicle with manual gearbox

–  Unscrew nut -4- and remove retainer -1- for wiring harness.
  Note
The electrical wiring remains connected.
–  Remove bolts -2- and -5- from starter -B--3-.
–  Remove starter -B--3- downwards.
Installing
Install in the reverse order of removal, observing the following:
Specified torques
→ Chapter „Assembly overview - starter“
–  Reconnect battery -A- → Chapter.
