Volkswagen Golf Service & Repair Manual / Guide for using trailers / General / Tachograph

In many European countries there is an obligation to install and use a tachograph on vehicles (including passenger vehicles) that serve purely for commercial purposes to transport goods where their maximum permissible weight including drawbar trailer or fifth wheel trailer exceeds 3.5 t. In this case, it makes no difference whether the pulling vehicle with trailer or either one separately is used to transport goods commercially.
   
Drawbar load details
The drawbar load specifications on the type plate of the towing attachment are test figures and apply only for that device. The valid drawbar load for the vehicle may lie below these values, and exceeding it is not permitted. These details can be found:

Legal requirements
When towing a trailer, the legal requirements of the respective country must be observed.

3) Applies to 2-door vehicles; trailer load on 4-door vehicles is 20 kg higher
For technical reasons, an increase in the permissible trailer load is not possible.
