Renewing right oil seal, gearboxes with flange shaft

Special tools and workshop equipment required

Thrust piece -3305-

Renewing right oil seal

Socket -T10107 A-

Renewing right oil seal

Tensioning strap -T10038-

Sealing grease → Electronic Parts Catalogue (ETKA)

Removing

Gearbox is installed.

Note

Observe → Chapter „Repair instructions“.

–	Remove noise insulation → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.66.

–	Drain gear oil → Chapter.

Renewing right oil seal

–	If present, remove heat shield above right drive shaft.

–	Turn steering to right to full lock.

–	Disconnect right drive shaft from gearbox → Running gear, axles, steering; Rep. gr.40.

Renewing right oil seal

–	Unscrew nuts -arrows- for right swivel joint.

–	If fitted, unscrew nut on bracket for front right vehicle level sender -G289-.

–	Detach right swivel joint from transverse link.

Renewing right oil seal

–	Secure right swivel joint -2- to transverse link -1- with a nut -arrow- as shown in illustration.

Renewing right oil seal

–	Secure right drive shaft to suspension strut with tensioning strap -T10038-.

The surface protection of the shaft must not be damaged.

Renewing right oil seal

–	Remove right flange shaft of gearbox using socket -T10107 A-.

Bolt has a 6 mm hexagon socket. It can also be removed and installed with hexagon key -V.A.G 1669-.

Renewing right oil seal

–	Screw 2 bolts into flange and counterhold flange shaft with a lever in order to remove and install flange shaft.

–	Remove flange shaft along with spring, thrust washer and tapered ring.

–	Pry seal out using assembly lever.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:

–	Lubricate outer circumference of new oil seal with gear oil.

–	Fill space between sealing lip and dust lip -arrow- with sealing grease → Electronic Parts Catalogue (ETKA).

Renewing right oil seal

–	Drive in new oil seal to stop, being careful not to cant oil seal.

Note

Renew flange shaft countersunk bolt.

Press flange shaft against spring force into gearbox so that bolt engages in threaded piece of differential.

–	Fit flange shaft and secure with new countersunk bolt. Specified torque: → Chapter

Renewing right oil seal

–	Install swivel joint → Running gear, axles, steering; Rep. gr.40.

–	Install drive shaft → Running gear, axles, steering; Rep. gr.40.

Renewing right oil seal

–	If present, install heat shield above right drive shaft. Specified torque → Running gear, axles, steering; Rep. gr.40.

–	Install noise insulation → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.66.

–	Fill with gear oil → Chapter.
