Volkswagen Golf Service & Repair Manual: Releasing high pressure in fuel system

The fuel system is under high pressure.Risk of injury due to fuel which may spurt out.Release high pressure.
Special tools and workshop equipment required
Vehicle diagnostic tester
Releasing high pressure in fuel system:
–  Connect vehicle diagnostic tester and then carry out the function “Reducing high fuel pressure” in “Guided functions”.
The fuel pressure will drop to the specified value.
–  Switch off ignition.
The fuel rail is still filled with fuel, but the fuel is not under high pressure anymore.
–  After the high pressure has been released, the high-pressure system must be opened »immediately«. To do this, wrap a clean cloth around the connection before opening it. Catch the escaping fuel.
  Note
If the high-pressure system is not opened immediately, the pressure will rise again due to reheating effects.
Now the ignition must not be switched on anymore, because switching the ignition on would cause the pressure to rise again.
Concluding measures
–  Clear event memory and generate the readiness code in engine control unit using “Guided functions” mode.
