Volkswagen Golf Service & Repair Manual: Paintwork system for plastic components

Issue 03.2010
This universal system allows simple and reliable painting of all external plastic components in standard applications. (Synthetic types: PP, EPDM, ABS, PC, PPO, PBTP, UP-GF, PA, PVC, R-TPU, PUR). This technical data sheet is not applicable for factory-primed plastic components.
Substrate
Preparing the substrate:

–  The substrate must be free of release agents. Before cleaning plastic parts, temper them for 60 minutes at +60 °C to sweat out the separating agents.
–  Clean with anti-static plastic cleaner -LKR 001 001 A3- or with the milder slow-drying silicone remover -LSE 20 100 A3-.
The effort required for cleaning depends on the type and quantity of the release agent used. It is recommended to use an emery pad to help in cleaning. Let the thinner evaporate completely (e.g. air-dry overnight at ambient temperature or for 30-40 minutes at +60°C).

–  Before priming, clean lightly again using anti-static plastic cleaner -LKR 001 001 A3- or slow-drying silicone remover -LSE 20 100 A3-.
Paintwork structure for unprimed plastic components
Priming:
To ensure reliable adhesion plastics must be primed following thorough cleaning. There are two options:
1. -  Prime with 2-pack primer surfacer for plastics, white -LKF 696 009- or with 2-pack primer surfacer for plastics, black -LKF 696 040-. The 2-pack primer surfacer for plastics, white -LKF 696 009- and the 2-pack primer surfacer for plastics, black -LKF 696 040- can be recoated with top coat right away.
2. -  Prime with transparent adhesion promoter -ALO 822 000 10-, and then fill with elasticised 2-pack HS surfacer. Proceed with top coat and clear coat.
In case of damage:
–  Small scratches can be filled with 2-pack fine filler -LSP 784 002 A2- after priming.
–  Isolate the filled surface after sanding:
1. -  With 2-pack primer surfacer for plastics, white -LKF 696 009- or with 2-pack primer surfacer for plastics, black -LKF 696 040-.
2. -  Prime with transparent adhesion promoter -ALO 822 000 10-, and then fill with elasticised 2-pack HS surfacer. Proceed with top coat and clear coat.
For information on the application instructions, flash-off times and drying times, refer to the technical data sheet:
→ Chapter „2-pack plastic adhesion surfacer“
  → Chapter „Adhesion promoter (transparent)“
  → Chapter „Top coats“
  → Chapter „Clear coats“
Use of 2-pack elastic additive -ALZ 011 001- in 2-pack HS surfacers:
15% on semi-rigid and rigid plastics
30 % on highly flexible plastics
Refer to technical data sheet of the respective surfacer for information on the application → Chapter.
  Note
Painted plastic parts must not be cleaned with a high-pressure cleaner during the first 6 weeks. After this period, the nozzle must be held at a distance of no less than 30 cm from the object.
One-coat painting
Top coat:

Paintwork system for plastic components

–  Mix 2-pack HS top coat with 15% 2-pack elastic additive -ALZ 011 001-, and then cross-link this mixture.

Paintwork system for plastic components

–  Mixing ratio 3:1 with 2-pack VHS hardener and 15% special 2-pack thinner -LVM 009 200 A2-.
Application:

Paintwork system for plastic components

–  Apply in one-and-a-half coats.
  P00-10032
–  Air dry overnight at +20°C, or after 5-10 minutes of final flash-off time for 30-40 minutes at +60°C. If 2-pack elastic additive -ALZ 011 001- is used, the drying times are longer.
Two-coat paintwork - non-metallic, metallic, pearls
Base coats:

–  Waterborne base coat with 10% demineralised water -LVW 010 000 A5-.
Application:

Paintwork system for plastic components

–  Apply in one-and-a-half coats.
Clear coats:

Paintwork system for plastic components

–  Mix 2-pack HS clear coats with 2-pack elastic additive -ALZ 011 001-.
Application:

Paintwork system for plastic components

–  According to relevant technical data sheet for the clear coat → Chapter „Clear coats“.
Drying:

Paintwork system for plastic components

–  Air dry overnight at +20°C, or after 10 minutes of final flash-off time for 40-45 minutes at +60°C. If 2-pack elastic additive -ALZ 011 001- is used, the drying times are longer.
Painting satin-gloss colour hues
One-coat painting; top coat:
