Volkswagen Golf Service & Repair Manual: Aligning exhaust system free of tension

Procedure
The exhaust system must be aligned when cold.
  Note
The -arrow- points forwards.
   
–  Loosen bolt connections for front clamp -arrow-.
 

Aligning exhaust system free of tension

–  Push exhaust system towards front of vehicle until preloading at mounting for exhaust pipe -a- = 5 mm.
–  Fit front clamp → Fig..

Align end exhaust pipes
–  Align rear silencer so that there is an equal distance -a- and -b- between bumper cut-out and tailpipe.
Vehicles with one tailpipe
–  Align rear silencer so that there is an even distance between bumper cut-out and tailpipes.
All vehicles
–  Unfasten rear silencer mounting to align tailpipes.
Specified torques
